Ricahokene

Ricahokene is one of five towns that John White noted were part of the Weapemeoc tribe. The town is not actually depicted on DeBry’s later engraving; here we have chosen Metocuuem, which De Bry placed across the Chowan River, as a substitute. It is unclear what the town name might have meant and there is a lot of speculation regarding if the Indians were related to the Richahecrians of Virginia. On John Smith’s 1608 map, the town is also depicted as one of four Weapemeoc towns, along with a notation about the town of Righkahauck on the Chickahominy River, which some researchers have interpreted as the same group moving north.
