Mascomenge

Given it’s location within a cluster of towns along the Chowan River and Albemarle Sound, it is perhaps unsurprising that Mascomenge is another of the four or five towns described as being a part of the Weapemeoc nation. Mascomenge roughly translates to “at the place of the bear berries,”; it’s thought that this town represented the western boundary of Weapemeoc territory.
