This timeline provides short overviews of the major precolonial archaeological periods used in North Carolina, along with links to representative sites. You can use the white arrows to navigate back and forth, or hold down your mouse and scroll through the different periods beneath the images. Note that across the rest of this site, we use the notation B.C. (before Christ) for prehistoric sites, while this timeline is standardized using the notation B.C.E., which stands for Before the Common Era. Besides the wording, there are no differences in the corresponding dates.
